SPEAKERS
KAREN PELHAM
Karen has more than 30 years of experience in operational and leadership roles, in organisations large and small, from NY to Frankfurt, and now in London. Karen entered the workforce in the 80s, at a time when businesses and financial markets were changing rapidly, setting ambitious targets for global expansion, and aggressively hiring women into previously male-dominated sectors.
She started her career in Goldman Sachs’s Treasury Division, playing an instrumental role in its funding at a time when the bank was expanding globally. She was promoted to Treasurer in their Frankfurt office in 1994, and was an early technology adapter establishing there a tech-enabled Treasury function. From Frankfurt, she moved to London where she ran the bank's short-term trading desk and helped build the early version of an electronic trading system, ground-breaking at the time, and which provided the building blocks for the market's infrastructure today.
Since her finance days, Karen has transitioned into operational and technology roles, using her banking expertise to assist businesses in identifying and managing risk as they grow. She has been a catalyst and driver of innovation, in industries such as insurance, wealth management, fintech, logistics, and security trading and settlement, to name a few.
Karen's multifaceted career spans a unique period of transformation in the business world and in the role of women in society. Her experiences, she has gained the breadth and depth of perspective that allows her to navigate complexity to deliver successful change.
Karen graduated from UC Berkeley, and received her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. She is on the Advisory Council of the Maturity Institute, which promotes setting professional standards across multiple disciplines, not just financial, with the goal of improving the organisational health of companies and create the most value for society
KATIE DASH
Head of Everyone’s Business, Confederation for British Industry (CBI)
Katie is Head of Everyone’s Business at the CBI tackling the changing role of business head on. The CBI’s Everyone’s Business report provides insight into people’s day to day relationships with business; and uses this research to target the disconnect between people and firms, identifying action that will improve understanding of what business does.
Katie has a proven track record of delivering positive and genuine political and business impact, translating the technical and intangible to the understandable and valuable. She is skilled at building strong relationships across both teams and hierarchies, to quickly take on new information and respond to change.
Katie is a graduate of The University of Edinburgh and the LSE where she got her Masters. She is a Board Trustee of the Black Cultural Archives.
MWENYA KAWESHA
Faculty AI (Moderator)
Mwenya is on the commercial team at Faculty AI, one of the world’s largest Data Science organisations. The business is well known for building tools that help detect ISIS propaganda on the internet and cancers. She also worked on the strategy team at Accenture, working with FTSE100 clients, artists and publishing thought leadership with the World Economic Forum and the World Bank.
Mwenya started her career in New York, working with President W.J. Clinton’s Global Initiative. She was also a Young Leader at the US Embassy in London and asked to have a call with the White House, attend and provide commentary for The Guardian for President B.H. Obama’s Townhall in April 2016. She was also Head of Local Partnerships for an initiative focused on finding a Bill Gates in Africa, where the winners got the opportunity to present to Queen Elizabeth II and received venture capital investment.
Mwenya received her BA in Modern History from Oxford University.
